Yes, I know that I have said that the number of backlinks pointing to your website is a huge plus for you in terms SEO. But that is not all there is to it. If you ever want to build links, then aim at getting ONLY high quality backlinks.

Any thing less than that will either negatively hurt your rankings (negative SEO) or your web page will be completely be removed from the search engine result pages (SERPS).

 Google, Yandex and other major search engines on the web have completely rewritten the rules of SEO. Therefore, you have to stop pretending that it is still 2005 when all you have to to do is launch a link building software just before you go to bed and get your website at the number one spot when you wake up.
The search engine algorithms have become smart, and you've got to keep up.

1. Presence of Do Follow and No Follow Backlinks.
Links to your website are like votes. It's used by the search engines to determine where a website should rank. When Google launched, they introduced the idea of ranking webpages bases primarily on the number of links that it has. This worked so well that most engines integrated it into their algorithm.

in order to differentiate between links that exist on a web page but as not as a form of endorsement, Google introduced no follow links. Example of such kinds of links that should be no followed include, links going out to a harmful website, sponsored links, or links going out to irrelevant or untrusted websites. As you might have guessed, getting these types might not get anywhere higher than where you are on the SERPs.

As a result of the fact that they do not pass link juice, most webmasters avoid it like a plague. Some others who are yet to fully understand the basics of SEO, began to spread some myths about it. One of the myths about no follow links is that it can hurt your rankings on Google. The truth is that this is not possible unless you are spamming it to death.

Believe me, no followed links aren't as valueless as people make them out to be. In some cases, they will actually improve your rankings especially if they are relevant and contextual. Therefore, when next you start doing link outreach and a webmaster gives you a nofollow link, you don't have to throw up a tantrum and become angry.

I would be a fool to tell you to get 70% do follow and 30% no follow links. In fact, no SEO who knows what he is doing will advise you to get a particular number of any kind of link. The best thing to do is to check out the website which is ranking number 1 on Google for that keyword, then copy the URL and analyse its backlink profile on tools like ahref, Moz Link Explorer or Majestic. Whatever you see will serve as a guide for you to get the right amount of do follow and no follow backlinks.

2. Social Shares and Cocitation
You and I know that the end point of most of these search engine algorithm updates is to provide more relevant results on SERPs that users have loved or are likely to love.
And one metric that shows how well your audience loved a particular post is the number of shares that it got.

In 2010, Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land received a confirmation from Google that social shares is now a ranking factor. After Google publicly announced that their three most important ranking factors are links, content, and rankbrain. Some SEO began to theorise that social shares is a huge part of Google's rankbrain.
So, what does this mean for you?

It means that Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites are no longer for posting and liking pictures of girls, guns and cats.  They should be used now for serious business.

Therefore, your link building campaigns should always start with getting a lot of shares for the web page that you are linking from and the one that you are linking to. This shows Google that your website deserves to be on the front page.

Just like every other search engine ranking factor, this started getting abused. Lots of people created lots of fake accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest just for the purpose of getting shares. This made Google to start counting shares that come from verified profiles only. People who were overdoing it with fake accounts started saying that social SEO is dead.

No, it isn't.

It's just that, this time, you need to get real people, active on social media, with a lot of followers.

But there's a way out...

If you are anything like me who thinks that networking sucks, then you need to know this. Google also ranks your website based on the likelihood that it would be shared.
When a sparkling new page is indexed by Google, it checks for the presence of certain things that most users will like on the page.

Examples of such things include the number of images, the number of words and the videos that can be found on the page.

 Lots of experiments had proved that having a high number of these things mentioned above will increase the number of shares that you could get (more of that will be discussed below).

As a result of the fact that it is likely to be shared by people because it is rich multimedia, Google will rank it higher.

What's more?

 Rebootonline recently performed an SEO experiment in which they found out that linking out to highly authoritative sources actually helped in increasing the rankings of websites.

Can you imagine what will happen if you get a link from the same webpage linking out to authoritative websites like Harvard.edu and Wikipedia.org? Of course, this works tremendously. I personally have achieved huge successes doing that.

For one, it helps to make Google to suspect you less of link manipulation, and it will make you to get the full link juice while standing on the shoulders of giants.



3. The Quantity and Quality of Linking Root Domains.

During the dark ages of SEO, it was possible to rank a website by creating 5000 anchor text optimized links from one root domain. However, that's no longer the case today. What consists of high quality links nowadays is getting few links from one domain.

According to a study performed by Ahref, the number of referring domains that a page has directly correlates with its rankings on search engine result pages. The more referring root domains that you have, the higher you will rank.

4. Relevance
If there's one mistake you should totally avoid during link building, it's getting links from irrelevant sources.

A link source is relevant if it contains the topic that is related to the web page that you will like to link out to. Why this is important is that it will help you to support Google in achieving its mission statement of "organizing information".

If you decide to work against Google by getting a link to a "payday loan" page from a page talking about chicken recipes, you will get penalized before you finish saying Jack Robinson.

Recent SEO experiments have even proved that getting relevant links helps you to get at the top spot of Google easily.  Take for instance, if you search Google for "best link building tools", the websites displayed on the first page are normally the most relevant results for that query.

They are relevant because they have LOTS of backlinks from websites that Google considers authoritative.

Now, here's the real trick...

 In order to rank for that search term, the most popular advice on the internet is to replicate the backlinks of those websites ranking on the first page of Google.

While that seems to work almost all of the time, I have found that it is much effective and faster to use the method which I outlined below. So, instead of doing what I just pointed out above, you can actually get links from the websites ranking above you.

Because of the fact that they are already relevant for that search term, you can get that relevance to be transferred to you by getting a link from their website. This works even if the link to your website is not on the same page that is ranking above yours.


5. Referral Traffic
If you have been in the SEO game for some time, you must have heard for about a thousand times that the kind of links that Google loves are editorial links.

This is not without any reason.

Whenever editors link to a website, they do it not only because they want to but also because it will be super relevant to the would be audience.

Moreover, if that link is not there, the readers might have a hard time fully understanding what the page is talking about.

And because of the fact that the link is very important part of the article, it will be placed on a prominent or visible part of the page.

This will then make a high percentage of  the visitors to click through to your website, sending you a ton of traffic by people who wants to read your stuff.

Now...

You should know that any traffic which didn't come from people typing your URL on their browsers or from people who found it on SERPs, then that traffic can be called referral traffic.

Referral traffic is very important for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) because it shows that people know about and discussions your website elsewhere on the web. And they like what they it so much that they actually visited it. This is a huge trust signal for Google.

Recently, Google has started cracking down on websites that get spammy links from all around the web - all with the purpose of manipulating their rankings on Google.
An attribute of low quality or spam links is that they send little to no referral traffic.

This is one of the biggest factors that uses to evaluate whether a link is a high quality backlink.

So, ditch that link if it won't get you traffic, it is going to hurt you more than it can help.  If you still want to get the link, make sure that it is a no follow backlink.
