1. Begin the Application Process Before the Time for Your Travel.

I am quite sure that you will not like to have your trip delayed because your passport is yet to achieve that stamp of approval from the authorities.

This kind of problem could lead you to cancel very important trips. And that's very frustrating!

So, here's what you should do...

Start early!

If you are planning to travel and you don't have a passport: stop all plans and focus on getting one for yourself.

8 (eight) weeks is the average waiting time for it to be approved. What this means that it will serve you better if you apply for the it three or four months before the time of your travel.

Also, according to the State Department, anybody who is applying for a passport for the first time must be there in person.

While coming, you are expected to bring some documents that will help in verifying your identity and supplying some necessary basic information about you. Checkout the list below.

2. Make Sure That You Have All the Necessary Documents

The main reason that you are being issued a passport is to show that you are who you say that you are.

That will help the authorities determine who is a criminal or find out someone who slipped into the country illegally (illegal immigrants).

On the day that you will apply, ensure that you have these documents listed below handy. This list contains the required documents for passport applications by the State Department.

Check out the complete list below.

√  Application forms (unsigned)
√ Proof of identity document and a photocopy
√ Proof of U.S. Citizenship document and a photocopy
√ Passport fees
√ State Department passport fee (costs vary)
√ $25.00 - Post Office processing fee
√ $15.00 - Post Office photo fee (if needed)

3. You May Submit Your Application Through the Post Office.

In the beginning of this article, I mentioned that you need to be present while applying for a passport especially for the first time.

However, if due to some circumstances, you were not able to go there, simply contact the government agency involved via email and explain your reason.

If they accept your excuse, then you will be required to register online.
Complete your Form DS-11 Application for U.S. Passport on the State Department website and print it out.

Don't sign it yet, it will be signed in front of the postal employee who will witness it accordingly and report to the State Department.

Attach the fees required to process the passport as well a proof that you are citizen of U.S.A

4. Wait For Your Passport to Be Processed and Approved.
It normally takes about 7 to 8 weeks. When they are done with the processing and the approval, it will be shipped to you.
